The Harley E. French Library of the Health Sciences adheres to the Guidelines set forth in the Policy and Procedures of the North Dakota, Higher Education Computer Network. The computers and installed software that are available for use in the library support the programs of the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) and the College of Nursing (CON).
Priority Use:
All computers are available on a priority basis.
- Priority will be given to students, faculty, and staff of the SMHS and CON.
- Priority is further based on primary ownership of the computers available.
- Access to biomedical information needs will be considered a priority. Example: Searching MEDLINE over word processing and e-mail.
- All e-mail is considered bottom priority.
User Verification
Computer access will be verified by U-Card.
Software:
Only the library computer services staff will install software on the library computers.
- License agreement must accompany the software.
- A minimum of three working days lead time is required.
- Request must be generated by SMHS or CON faculty or staff.
Computer Assistance:
The library staff is available to assist users with applications made available through the library. When questions arise specific to non-library applications, such as word processing and PowerPoint, the staff may only be able to provide limited assistance or direct the patron to another source.
The library maintains anti-virus software on all public access computers. Whenever possible, the library staff will assist the user in cleaning viruses from their disks.
Acceptable Use:
The same principles that guide the use of other library resources apply to the use of electronic resources. The library staff expect patrons to use electronic resources in a responsible manner respecting the rights of others, and in accordance with the HECN Policy.
Not Acceptable Use:
- installing software to the hard drive,
- playing games,
- leaving your work open on a computer,
- degrading or disrupting equipment or system performance,
- vandalizing the data of any other user,
- gaining unauthorized access to resources or entities,
- invading the privacy of individuals,
- violating federal, state, or local laws or regulations,
- engaging in any activity that is offensive or creates an intimidating or hostile environment.

Donations of Computer Equipment
Computer equipment that is donated for the public area of the library must meet or exceed the specifications of equipment currently available in the library. Final determination will be made by the Director of the Library.
