Scholarly Publication and Open Access Webcast

You are invited to a webcast on Scholarly Publication and Open Access, which will be held in the classroom of the Library of the Health Sciences from 1 - 3 pm on Tuesday, November 20th. The webcast is presented by the Medical Library Association (MLA).

Objectives of the program are:
1.  To introduce, define, and explain significant models of scholarly publishing
2.  To explore the impact of open access on academic libraries, hospital libraries, and authors
3.  To discuss practical examples of new models of scholarly publishing and describe actions from both university and hospital perspectives to support new approaches.

Issues to be addressed include:
Part I:  What is scholarly publishing?  Definition of scholarly publishing - Public access - Associations involved in the issues - Key issues in the publishing industry.
Part II:  Environmental scan of the publishing industry.  How are publishers reacting to open access? - What new models are emerging? - What are the flavors of open access? - What are the concerns among publishers? - What about issues of sustainability?
Part III:  What is the impact on libraries and their users?  Impact and concerns for libraries - Impact, benefit, and concerns for the author/researcher - Ways librarians and libraries can support these new initiatives.
Part IV:  Resources.

SCOPUS Training on Thursday, April 26th

Please come!  Thursday April 26th 1 to 2 pm in Medical School Room B320B.  Training and update on using SCOPUS for Citation Searching including sorting results, citation overviews, how to use SCOPUS when preparing grant applications. and using the Hirsch or h-index a new performance management tool for scientific authors.  Presented by SCOPUS trainer, Armond Dirado.   Questions welcomed!  Register to win an  iPod Shuffle and Memory Stick (512 MB) to be presented later in the afternoon.

PDA Training

A series of 30-minute sessions in February will focus on tips for using your PDA's.  They will be held in Room B320B in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences building and will be presented by Mary Markland, Southeast Clinical Campus Librarian.  All sessions will be held on Thursdays.

MD Consult/First Consult Training

A trainer from MD Consult/First Consult will be on campus November 1.  There are two training sessions scheduled at 1 pm and 3 pm on Tuesday November 1st.  The 1 pm session will be in the library classroom, Room 1300K .  The 3 pm session will be held in room B320b in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences Building.  MD Consult/First Consult is a suite of electronic information resources including books, journal articles, and patient information that meets the clinical content needs of physicians and other health care professionals.  Access to this resource is provided through the generous support of the children of Karl Christian Wold, M.D. who created the Dr. Karl Christian Wold Endowment for the library.
Everyone is welcome to attend the training.
SCOPUS Open House & Training

The University of North Dakota Libraries staff invites students, faculty, and staff to training sessions and an open house to learn about Scopus.  What is Scopus?...A new web research tool that is the most extensive abstract and citation database ever assembled.  It has currently 28 million records from 1966 to the present covering articles from over 14,200 peer-reviewed titles from more than 4,000 international publishers covering social science, scientific, medical, and technical subjects.  Scopus will help you keep up-to-date on new research, find unexpected connections between subject areas, locate patent information, see reference lists from articles, and discover who is citing your publications.

Scopus at UND was funded through the University of North Dakota Libraries, North Dakota INBRE, & UND Neuroscience COBRE.

Training sessions will be presented by a Scopus trainer and are scheduled for October 12:

ScienceDirect Training.

ScienceDirect training will be held on campus to assist users with navigating the expanded offerings on this electronic resource.  There will be two sessions at the Chester Fritz Library on Turesday October 5th and one at the Library of the Health Sciences on Wednesday October 6th at 10:00 am.  A trainer from ScienceDirect will be available to update users on the newest features.  There will be refreshments and door prizes.  Stop by Room B320b in the School of Medicine & Health Sciences for the hands-on session.
