Dr. Karl Christian Wold Endowment funds new and expanded electronic resources
Posted Wednesday, August 17, 2005, 5:37 pm by HEFL Webmaster
The Harley E. French Library of the Health Sciences is very proud to announce the addition and expansion of several electronic resources that have been made possible by the generous support of the children of Karl Christian Wold, M.D.  They have created the Dr. Karl Christian Wold Endowment having the purpose "to assist in acquiring the resources necessary for the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences to remain the most respected medical library in the region."

Several key clinical information resources are being supported in whole or in part by the Wold Endowment. These resources are available to the medical school's students and faculty, including the volunteer community clinical faculty, throughout the state. These resources are:

DynaMed:  an evidence-based medical reference system designed for use at the point of care. It contains clinically organized summaries of nearly 1,800 topics and is updated daily from review of the research literature.

Cochrane Library:  a regularly-updated collection of evidence-based medicine resources; includes full-text systematic reviews.

InfoRetriever and InfoPOEMS:  filtered, synopsized, evidence-based information; includes decision support tools, diagnostic calculators, summaries of evidence-based practice guidelines, 5-Minute Clinical Consult, and  the DailyPOEMS.  PDA download available.

MDConsult from Elsevier:  a collection of over 60 clinical books, nearly 100 full-text journals including the Clinics of North America, a collection of Year Books, practice guidelines, drug information (including Mosby's Drug Consult), medical news, and 6,500 customizable patient handouts.  PDA downloads available through Pocket Consult, which includes Mosby's Drug Consult, 20 medical calculators, tables of contents and abstracts you can select from 400 journals.

FirstConsult from Elsevier:  evidence-based primary care information system. PDA download available through Pocket Consult.

Access Medicine:  a collection of 22 clinical textbooks from the Lange Educational Library, plus the Lange Self-Assessment Tool for the USMLE Step I and Step II.

PsychiatryOnline:  5 electronic journals, DSM-IV-TR Library, APA Practice Guidelines, Textbook of Clinical Psychiatry. psychiatric news.

Notice that many of these products are evidence-based, and many have components that can be downloaded to a handheld computer.

There are no restrictions on number of simultaneous users on any of these resources. That means you will be able to access them at any time and never get a message such as "Maximum number of users logged on - access denied."

New INBRE and COBRE resources
Posted Monday, July 18, 2005, 4:57 pm by HEFL Webmaster
Due to monies available through the INBRE grant with assistance from the Neuroscience COBRE grant, faculty, students, and researchers now have access to SCOPUS.  What is this database?  Scopus is a new, easy-to-use, powerful multidisciplinary navigational tool across scientific information. Scopus covers 14,000 peer-reviewed titles from 4,000 publishers and includes an integrated Web search.  It  gives abstracts back to 1966 and the reference lists from articles back to 1996.  It can be used to determine which authors are citing your work.  There are Quick Reference Guides and Online Tutorials available.  More detailed and in-person training will be available this fall.

INBRE money has also made available the journals from Oxford University Press . Users had access to a few of these titles previously, but new titles now available include:   Alcohol and Alcoholism , Bioinformatics , Carcinogenesis , and Human Molecular Genetics .

Loansome Doc Changes
Posted Friday, June 3, 2005, 10:44 am by HEFL Webmaster
Loansome Doc users should be aware of some changes coming to the system on Monday June 5, 2005.  The most important change in this new version of Loansome Doc is that you will login using the email address from your Loansome Doc record.  For example, if your email address is yourname@medicine.nodak.edu, your user name to log into Loansome Doc will also be yourname@medicine.nodak.edu.  You will use the same password that you used for Loansome Doc previously.

If you can't remember the email address that you used in your registration, contact the Interlibrary Loan office at 777-2606, or send an e-mail message to:  ranisate@medicine.nodak.edu.  If you've forgotten your password, there will be a link to click on the Loansome Doc request screen to receive a new one.

The Interlibrary Loan staff will update your ILLiad account, so that your e-mail address will also be your username there.  Your Loansome Doc password and your ILLiad password will be the same.  Note:  If you change your password in Loansome Doc, please notify the Interlibrary Loan office, so that they can make the same change in ILLiad.

If you have problems, please contact the Interlibrary Loan office at 777-2606.

Other changes in Loansome Doc include an ordering screen that alerts you if the article is not yet available in print and if you have already ordered the document in the last 40 days.  You will also be alerted from the ordering screen if the article is available online for free.  There will be an Order Status feature and a My Account which will enable you to change your information as needed.

For more details about the changes consult Loansome Doc changes.

NIH Public Access Policy.
Posted Wednesday, May 4, 2005, 9:10 am by HEFL Webmaster
After several months of debate and comment, NIH issued its "Policy on Enhancing Public Access to Archived Publications Resulting from NIH-Funded Research" on February 3, 2005. Guidelines for the implementation of that policy were issued April 29, 2005 and went into effect May 2, 2005.  The Policy requests and strongly encourages all NIH-funded investigators to make their peer-reviewed author's final manuscripts available to other researchers and the public at the NIH National Library of Medicine's PubMed Central (PMC) immediately after the final date of journal publication. At the time of submission, authors are given the option to release their manuscripts at a later time, up to 12 months after the official date of final publication. NIH expects that only in limited cases will authors deem it necessary to select the longest delay period.
NIH has developed an FAQ site to assist researchers in complying with this request.  This initiative is an important step in making federally funded research freely available and in the open access arena.  Please contact Judy Rieke at jrieke@medicine.nodak.edu in the library for comments or if you have further questions.

SCOPUS Trial
Posted Thursday, January 20, 2005, 10:41 am by HEFL Webmaster
Please try SCOPUS .  It is a web based indexing and abstracting database that also tracks who is citing your articles.  For more information, go to About SCOPUS . Use your favorite author in the first search box and their affiliaton in the second.  It will give you a list of publications and for the older articles there will be a history of who cited them.  You can also do subject searches and retrieve scholarly articles, web information, and patent information (if it applies).  This trial lasts until the end of January.  Please send comments to jrieke@medicine.nodak.edu.
