ABOUT
INFORMATION ACCESS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH PROFESSIONALS IN NORTH DAKOTA
Information Access for Public Health
Professionals in North Dakota is a project funded by the National Library of
Medicine under a contract (NO1-LM-6-3523) with the University of Illinois at
Chicago.
The purpose of this project is to
provide public health professionals in the state of North Dakota with timely,
convenient access to health care information resources. In their effort to provide
this access the project team will:
* Inform public health professionals
in North Dakota of the services available from the Harley E. French Library
of the Health Sciences (HEF Library) and its three clinical campus libraries,
the National Network of Libraries of Medicine-Greater Midwest Region, and the
National Library of Medicine.
* Improve the level and quality of
communication between the Harley E. French Library and its clinical campus libraries
and the public health professionals working in North Dakota.
* Instruct public health employees
in the most efficient and productive access to healthcare services provided
by the Harley E. French Library and its clinical campus libraries, the National
Network of Libraries of Medicine-Greater Midwest Region, and the National Library
of Medicine. This objective speaks to specific instruction on use of information
tools. These tools will include but not be limited to PubMed, Internet Grateful
Med (IGM), Loansome Doc, the Internet, specific resources of the Harley E. French
Library, specific programs and resources of the NN/LM-GMR, specific programs
and resources of the National Library of Medicine, and the specific information
resources of the National Institutes of Health.
* Improve the level and quality of
communication between the reference desk at the HEF Library and public health
practitioners of the state.
* Investigate the "information seeking
process" in relation to public health professionals' information seeking skills.
The information seeking process model identified by Carol Kuhlthau (1) will
be used as a model. This study will investigate Carol Kuhlthau's information
search process in relation to the role of formal mediators (librarians) and
informal mediators (e.g., peers) in a public health professional environment.
* Develop a plan for continued programming
and services required to meet the health care information needs of public health
professionals in North Dakota.
