PILOTS is an abbreviation for Published International Literature on Traumatic Stress. The PILOTS database is produced by the National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs web site, "The goal of the PILOTS database is to include citations to all literature on PTSD and other mental-health sequelae of traumatic events, without disciplinary, linguistic, or geographical limitations, and to offer both current and retrospective coverage."

Subject Coverage

* post-traumatic stress disorder or acute stress disorder (with or without reference to the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders)
* the assessment, description, prevention, or treatment of any psychiatric disorder, especially dissociative identity disorder (formerly called multiple personality disorder), other dissociative disorders, or borderline personality disorder, associated etiologically or epidemiologically with exposure to a traumatic event, or to an event experienced as traumatic by the population under discussion
* the preparation or provision of mental health services to a traumatized population or a population at risk of experiencing traumatic events
* issues of professional ethics, scientific methodology, or public policy relating to traumatized populations.

OrganDonor.Gov is the official US Government website for organ and tissue donation and transplantation, is maintained by the Health Resources and Services Administration, Healthcare Systems Bureau, Division of Transplantation, an agency of the US Department of Health and Human Services. The site provides donation and transplantation basics; information for donors, including frequently asked questions; and information on risk reduction, research, best practices and legislation.

Medical School for the Public 2008

The library has compiled a list of high-quality electronic resources for the 2008 Medical School for the Public, "Drugs and Bugs: Medical Education from Lab to Community". Classes are being held on Tuesday evenings in April from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. and are available both in person and on-line. The web sites provided by the library are intended as sources of further information on the topics covered in the classes. Additional sites will be added as the class progresses.

NIH Public Access Policy

The Library of the Health Sciences wants to make faculty, staff and students aware of the recently adopted NIH Public Access Policy . This policy ensures that the public has access to the final, peer-reviewed, published results of NIH funded research. It requires that these articles be accessible to the public on PubMed Central to help advance science and improve human health. The NIH Public Access Website: http://publicaccess.nih.gov/ has been established to facilitate the process.

On December 26, 2007, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2007 (H.R. 2764) was signed and directs the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to provide public access to its funded research. This new mandate requires researchers funded by NIH to submit their manuscripts to PubMed Central. Scientists who publish in journals that do not submit articles directly to PubMed Central must deposit their manuscripts no later than 12 months after the official date of publication.

InfoPOEMS with InfoRetriever now Essential Evidence Plus

InfoPOEMS with InfoRetriever is now available under a new name, Essential Evidence Plus. Essential Evidence Plus will continue to feature InfoPOEMS, the daily content alerting service and the search application formerly known as InfoRetriever. It will also incorporate two new resources - EBM Guidelines and e-Essential Evidence. EBM Guidelines includes a collection of more than 950 Practice Guidelines, more than 3,000 Evidence Summaries, and more than 1,000 images. E-Essential Evidence will be added during the first quarter of 2008. It is a general medical reference with content integrated and hyperlinked to all of the resources in Essential Evidence Plus, including InfoPOEMS summaries and The Cochrane Database of Systematic Review Abstracts.

MyNCBI Automatic Searches May be Delayed

Annual Medline/PubMed Year-End Processing will temporarily halt the addition of fully-indexed Medline citations to PubMed on November 14, 2007. If you have MyNCBI searches that contain MeSH terms you will not receive new results until the Year-End Processing is complete. Tentative completion is targeted for early December 2007.

Scholarly Publication and Open Access Webcast

You are invited to a webcast on Scholarly Publication and Open Access, which will be held in the classroom of the Library of the Health Sciences from 1 - 3 pm on Tuesday, November 20th. The webcast is presented by the Medical Library Association (MLA).

Objectives of the program are:
1. To introduce, define, and explain significant models of scholarly publishing
2. To explore the impact of open access on academic libraries, hospital libraries, and authors
3. To discuss practical examples of new models of scholarly publishing and describe actions from both university and hospital perspectives to support new approaches.

Issues to be addressed include:
Part I: What is scholarly publishing? Definition of scholarly publishing - Public access - Associations involved in the issues - Key issues in the publishing industry.
Part II: Environmental scan of the publishing industry. How are publishers reacting to open access? - What new models are emerging? - What are the flavors of open access? - What are the concerns among publishers? - What about issues of sustainability?
Part III: What is the impact on libraries and their users? Impact and concerns for libraries - Impact, benefit, and concerns for the author/researcher - Ways librarians and libraries can support these new initiatives.
