The Library of the Health Sciences has reserved 8 study carrels on the second floor for use by basic science and nursing graduate or post-doctoral students, and faculty and staff from School of Medicine & College of Nursing. This will allow them to keep materials there for uninterrupted use while the library is open during the day. They can be reserved by checking them out from the Circulation Desk. The complete policy and more information is available at the circulation desk. Please call Reference (777-3994) or Circulation (777-3993) with questions.

Home Page Redesign Posted Monday, January 8, 2001, 12:00 am
The library's home page has been redesigned. There are two major changes in addition to a number of design enchancements. The first change is the elimination of the three columns of links under Library Information, Library Resources, and Special Links. The columns have been replaced with drop down menus that become visible when the curser is moved across the graphics on the upper left side of the home page. This eliminates the need for home page users to scroll down the page to see important links. The second major change is the introduction of a search engine. When a term is entered in the search box, a search engine called ht:/dig is used to search all of the library's web pages, as well as the first level of all external sites linked to the library's web site. Anyone having problems using the library's newly redesigned home page can contact Theresa Norton at tnorton@medicine.nodak.edu or 701-777-2946

    E-Journal Survey Posted Tuesday, December 26, 2000, 12:00 am
The results of our recent SURVEY ON ELECTRONIC JOURNALS AND MEDLINE ACCESS are now complete. The survey, which was conducted from November 21 to December 5, 2000, was designed to measure usage and acceptance of electronic journals. We also wanted to find out how faculty, students, and staff are accessing MEDLINE. The returns will be very helpful as we decide how to allocate resources for the next year. If you have questions or concerns regarding the survey or the results, please contact Judy Rieke, Assistant Director and Collection Management Librarian (jrieke@medicine.nodak.edu) or call 701-777-4129.

Prospero Testing Posted Tuesday, December 26, 2000, 12:00 am
The Harley E. French Library of the Health Sciences is currently testing Prospero with a group of ten faculty and staff volunteers from the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Prospero is a Web-based document delivery system designed as a complement to the Ariel software system used by the library's interlibrary loan department.

Prospero takes journal articles that have been received electronically from other libraries via Ariel, and saves them on a web server in the library. It then notifies the requester that the article has been received. The requesting patron receives an email announcement of the availability of the article along with a hypertext link to that article. The patron can click on the link to read the article, print it out, or to download it to their computer.

If the current test is successful, access to Prospero will be offered to additonal faculty and staff in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and eventually to other library user groups. To use Prospero, a library patron will need Internet access, Acrobat Reader software, and a browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape. Questions regarding Prospero may be directed to Theresa Norton at tnorton@medicine.nodak.edu or 701-777-2946.
